Kaleidoscopic Bloom
Size 36 x 18 cm
Medium Watercolour on paper
Year 2025

"Kaleidoscopic Bloom" is inspired by a pattern found on a 14th century door in Old Cairo. The geometric tassels are filled with biomorphic motifs, as in the tradition of minbars one can observe in Old Cairo's mosques where wooden tassels are inlaid with ebony and camel bone in floral shapes. The resulting kaleidoscopic effect wants to remind the viewer of how the divine order of the world we live in is also beautifully multifaceted and we are limited in our ability to clearly see the full plan, only God can. The richness of decoration and colours of the painting in fact allow the viewer to only careful observe a few tassels at the same time.

As the sun sets, monkeys move across the rooftops, their silhouette marked against the red sky. Some pause in contemplation, others in restless in motion. The jali screens, perfectly still, stand the test of time in their beauty and balance.

In the drawing the life energy of monkeys contrasts with the stillness, balance and perfection of the architectural elements. The dynamism of monkeys is a metaphor for our ever changing nature as human beings and the flux of life. The architecture instead represents the pillars standing the test of time anchoring the living flow. Be them ethical principles, or spirituality - those are truly the Fort of the Soul.

Welcomed by elephants like a queen, I see reality through a lace of lotus flowers. The beauty of lotus blooms also in muddy water, it is time the rays of sun shine through.

The drawing is inspired the jali screens and lotus patterns found throughout Rajasthan. The lotus pattern hereby represents a filter through which reality is observed, both in a physical sense (the jali screens through which the rays of sun shine through) and in consciousness (the awareness of being able to rise in beauty even when surrounded by muddy waters).

The Secret Garden
Size 30 x 42 cm
Medium Watercolour and gouache on paper
Year 2024

"The Secret Garden" is inspired by a pattern found on one of the arches overlooking the courtyard (sahn) in Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo. In the painting, flowers and birds ordinately populate circular gardens intersecting each other. A symbol for the natural order of nature and interconnectedness of living communities. The title of the artwork is an allusion both to the circular gardens embedded in the painting and the mosque courtyard as a gated place of joy and peace, like a garden.
